NUPTIAL SERMON

It is propitious to read a sermon at a wedding ceremony in order to explain the significance of
' Nikah ' ( marriage contract ) in divine law, and to bring home to the parties requirements and heavy responsibilities imposed by this contract. With a view to derive the maximum benefit from the sermon, it is advisable for the preacher to translate the sermon and offer a brief exegesis of the text in the vernacular so that the assembly may fully appreciate the sermon. To this end, we reproduce below the text of the Nuptial Sermon along with its translation.

Innalhamda lillahi nastainuhu wa nastaghfiruhu wa na'udhu billahi min shururi anfusina man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lahu waman yudlihu fala hadia lahu wa ash-hadu an la-ilaha illallahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu.
" Thanksgiving and praise are due to Allah alone, we seek aid from Him alone; and we beseech forgiveness of our sins from Him only; and consign ourselves to the protection of Allah against the evils of our souls and against all offences. Truly, whomsoever Allah guides on the straight path (and He puts him only on the straight path who sincerely desires to walk along that way), no one can lead him astray. And whomsoever God deflects (and He deflects only him who yearns to be defelcted), no one can put him on the straight pat. And I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and I testify that Muhammad is the bondman of Allah and His Messenger".

Ya-ayyuhalladhina amanuttaqullaha haqqa tuqatihi wala tamutunna illa wa antum muslimun.
" O Believers ! Fear Allah, as He should be duly feared; and die not save you be Muslim".

Ya-ayyuhannas uttaqu rabbakumullaadhi khakaqakum min nafsin wahidatin wa khalaqa minha zaujaha wa bassa min huma rijalan kasiran wa nisa'a. Wattaqulla-halladhi tasaa'luna bihi wal arham.Innallaha kana alaikum raqiba.
" O mankind ! Fear the wrath of your Lord who created you from a single soul and from it created his spouse; and from them twain hath spread ( all over the world ) a multitude of men and women. Fear Allah, in Whom you claim your rights from one another and ( be careful in observing your duty to ) the wombs (that bore you). So ! Allah is Watchful over you".

Ya-ayyuhalladhina amanuttaqullahu wa qulu qaulan sadidan yaslih lakum a'amalakum wa taghfirlakum dhunubakum wa man yuti ' illah wa rasulahu faqad faza fauzan azima.      (Muslim )
" O Believers ! Fear God constantly; and utter what is fair and sound God, then, will rectify your deeds and cover up your sins with forgiveness; and whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, he indeed shall secure a glorious success".

Wa qala rasulullahi sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam. Wallahi inni la akhshakum lillahi wa atqakum lahu wa lakinni asumu wa uftiru wa usalli wa arqudu wa atazawwajun nisa'a faman raghiba 'an sunnati falaisa minni.          (Bukhari )
The Holy Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) says.
" By God ! I fear Allah more than all of you; I save my self from the wrath of Allah more than do all of you; but I observe fast and sometime I do not keep fast. I say prayers at night and I sleep also; and I also take women in marriage. Hence whosoever turns away from my way, he bears no relation with me".
